Should I Get Balayage or Foilayage?

Choose balayage for a soft, lived-in blend, and foilayage when you want a lighter blonde on darker hair or simply prefer the look of foil highlights. Balayage is painted by hand and left open, so it melts into your natural color. Foilayage wraps the lightened sections in foil, which helps dark hair reach a lightness that hand painting alone may not. Your starting color and goal decide it.

Key takeaways

  • Balayage gives a soft, dimensional blend that grows out softer than traditional highlights.
  • Foilayage uses foils to reach a light blonde on darker hair and includes a full head of highlights.
  • Both include Metal Detox and Bond Repair products, a customized toner and a blow-dry at SALT.

How Do Balayage and Foilayage Differ in the Chair?

Balayage is a French highlighting technique inspired by the way sunlight naturally brightens hair. Lightener is painted on by hand and left open to the air, so it fades softly into your natural color.

Foilayage keeps the painted look but wraps the sections in foil. Foil holds in warmth and keeps the lightener working, which helps darker hair reach a lighter level.

On our Service Menu, Signature Balayage, Express Balayage and Foilayage are separate services. Foilayage includes a full head of highlights.

Which Technique Suits Darker Hair?

If you have dark brown or black hair and want a light blonde balayage look, foilayage is often the better route. Foils are used to reach lightness on dark hair where a hand-painted technique may not get there.

That does not rule out balayage on dark hair. It can look beautiful as a warmer, softer, deeper lift. The real question is how light you want to go.

When your goal is a big lift, we will tell you plainly whether it fits in one visit. Sometimes it takes more than one, and we would rather plan that with you than rush it.

How Does Each One Grow Out?

Balayage grows out softer and lasts longer than traditional highlighting. With no hard line at the root, new growth blends into the painted color.

Foilayage grows out well too, but because it is brighter and often placed closer to the root, regrowth can show sooner, depending on how light you go. Both can be refreshed between full services with a Gloss, and existing balayage can be brightened around the face and crown with Express Balayage.

What Does Each Look Like on Your Starting Shade?

Light Brown or Dark Blonde

Either works. Balayage gives a soft blend, and foilayage adds more brightness if you want it.

Dark Brown

Balayage gives a warmer, softer lift. Foilayage is the path to a lighter blonde.

Black

Lifting black hair takes the most time. Foilayage is often the more reliable route to a light result, and we will talk through whether that is one visit or several.

Already Blonde

You may not need either. Express Balayage, a Blonde Mini or a Gloss can often refresh blonde without a full service.

How Do We Help You Decide at the Consultation?

  1. We look at your hair in natural light and ask what has been on it, including box color.
  2. We look at your photos and ask what you like about each one.
  3. We talk about upkeep and how often you want to be in the chair.
  4. We explain which service fits, how long it takes and if your goal fits in one visit.
  5. If another service would serve you better, we change the plan.

What Questions Point You Toward One or the Other?

  • How light do you want to go? Soft and sun-kissed points to balayage. A clearly light blonde on dark hair points to foilayage.
  • What is your starting color? The darker your hair, the more likely foils are the tool.
  • How much upkeep suits you? If you want fewer visits, tell us and we will plan placement around it.
  • Do you like the look of foils? Some people simply prefer crisp, bright foil highlights.
  • Has your hair been colored at home? Past color changes the plan.

Bring a few photos you love and a few you do not. Then we will tell you what is realistic. For a deeper look at the technique, read what balayage hair color is, and for timing, see how long balayage takes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Foilayage Harder on Hair Than Balayage?

Any lightening is a chemical service, and how your hair responds depends on its condition and how far it is lifted. Every lightening service at SALT includes Metal Detox and Bond Repair products, and we will tell you if your hair needs a break.

Can I Switch From Balayage to Foilayage Later On?

Yes. You can start with balayage and move to foilayage when you want to go lighter, or go the other way for a softer look.

Does Foilayage Come With a Toner?

Yes. Every lightening service at SALT is finished with a customized toner and a professional blow-dry.

How Long Is a Foilayage Appointment?

Up to about four hours, because it is a full head of highlights.

Which Looks More Natural, Balayage or Foilayage?

Both can look natural. Balayage reads softer because there is no foil pattern, and foilayage gives more brightness where you want it.
