Balayage is a freehand highlighting technique where your colorist paints lightener onto your hair by hand, so your color melts from deeper roots into brighter, sun kissed lengths. At SALT Salon + Spa in Antioch, IL, we offer a signature balayage priced by hair length and an express version for touch ups around the face and crown.
What Is Balayage Hair Color?
The word comes from the French for "to sweep," and that is exactly how it is applied. Balayage is a French highlighting technique inspired by the way sunlight naturally brightens hair. Instead of weaving tiny foils from root to tip, your colorist sweeps color across the surface in a pattern that suits your cut, your part and the way your hair falls.
The result is soft and dimensional. There is no hard line at the root, so as your hair grows there is nothing to chase. That is why balayage grows out softer and can usually go longer between visits than traditional highlights.
How Is Balayage Different From Traditional Highlights?
Traditional foil highlights are placed in an even, repeating pattern. They are great when you want a bright, uniform blonde, and we do those too (our Blonde Full and Blonde Partial services). Balayage is placed by eye, with more brightness where light would naturally hit and a softer blend where it would not.
If you want a lived in look with more dimension, balayage is usually the answer. If you want a platinum or ash blonde from root to tip, foils are usually the better tool. We will tell you which one fits what you are picturing, even if it is not the one you walked in asking for.
What Happens at Your Balayage Appointment?
Every visit starts with a real conversation. We look at your starting color, your hair length and texture, and the photos you have saved. We talk about how much upkeep you want, because the right balayage for someone who wants to come in less often is not the same as for someone who likes a frequent refresh.
Then your colorist paints. Every lightening service at SALT includes Metal Detox and Bond Repair products to keep your hair healthy and strong. Your color is finished with a customized toner for the tone you want, and every lightening service ends with a professional blow dry so you can see the final result before you leave.
How Long Does Balayage Take?
It depends on your hair length and how much lightening your starting color needs. Our signature balayage is priced by hair length for that reason: short hair at chin length or above takes the least time, medium length (below the chin to the collarbone) takes more, and long hair past the collarbone takes the longest, often most of an afternoon. Express balayage is shorter than a medium or long signature because it only brightens the face frame and crown. You will find the current time and price for each option in the Balayage + Lightening section of our Service Menu.
Signature Balayage, Express Balayage or Foilayage: Which One Should You Book?
Signature balayage is a full head application. It is the right choice for your first balayage and for regular maintenance if you already have balayage and want it refreshed all over.
Express balayage is a touch up. If you already have balayage and just want brightness back around the face and through the crown, this is the quicker way to get it.
Foilayage uses foils to reach lightness on darker hair, where a hand painted technique alone may not get you to a light blonde. It is also a good fit if you simply prefer the look of foil highlights.
Not sure which is yours? Call the salon at (224) 788-8028 or note your goal when you book, and we will reserve the right service and time. We would rather get it right than rush it. Our guide to choosing balayage or foilayage walks through the difference, and our article on how long balayage takes covers timing.
How Do You Keep Balayage Bright and Not Brassy?
A worry we hear often: "I don't like red or want it to be brassy." Warm tones show up when toner fades and when hair is exposed to hard water, heat and sun. Here is what helps:
- Wash with a color safe shampoo and conditioner, and ask us which Davines or Sunlights care fits your hair type.
- Use a heat protectant before hot tools.
- Book a gloss between color appointments to refresh your tone. It is one of the simplest ways to keep your color looking just finished.
- Rinse with cooler water when you can.
Using the right products every day makes the biggest difference, so we would rather help you build a short routine you will actually use than hand you a long list. Our article on keeping blonde from going brassy or red goes deeper.
What Pairs Well With Balayage?
Balayage pairs well with a cut, because placement looks best on a shape that suits it. Our French haircuts follow your head shape, so the brightness lands where the hair falls. Between visits, a gloss from our hair color services refreshes tone without another round of lightening. If frizz hides your color, ask about a Brazilian blowout.
