Professional hair color is permanent or semi permanent color applied by a trained colorist to cover gray, deepen or change your shade, or add dimension. At SALT Salon + Spa in Antioch, IL, we offer root retouches, color with highlights, full head color and glosses, with fashion color available for guests who want something bolder.

What Color Services Does SALT Offer?

We keep the menu simple so you can find what you need quickly. Root retouch, color + highlights, color full head and gloss are in the Hair Color section of our Service Menu, with current times and pricing:

  • Root retouch. Classic permanent color to cover gray at the roots. Pair it with a haircut when you want to leave with everything done.
  • Color + highlights. Color with mini foils or an express balayage concentrated around the face and the top of the head, with a toner included.
  • Color full head. Permanent color applied from roots to ends. This is a color service, not a highlight service.
  • Gloss. A semi permanent service to revive, refresh or re-tone your color between visits.

Men's color blending, a subtle way to soften gray, is not listed on the menu. Ask about it when you book.

If you want a hand painted blend rather than an all over shade, take a look at our balayage page.

What Color Does SALT Use?

We use Moroccanoil's permanent color line, which is infused with argan oil. Every color service includes our signature shampoo experience and a blow dry finish, because the clearest way to judge a color is to see it styled. Root retouch color processes in about 15 minutes.

How Do You Choose the Right Shade?

Start with how you live. How often do you want to be in the chair? Do you wear your hair down or up? Do you like warm tones, or do you hate seeing red and brass? That last one comes up a lot, and we take it seriously. Your colorist will look at your natural level, your skin tone and your past color history, and then explain, in plain words, what the formula will do and what it will not.

We do not believe in pushing you toward something you have not asked for. You already know what you like. Our job is to make it work for your hair.

When Do We Do a Test Strand?

A test strand is a small, quiet check before the full service. We apply the formula to a tiny section so we can see how your hair takes the color, how it processes and whether the result matches what we planned. It is especially helpful if your hair has had previous color or lightener, if you are trying a fashion shade for the first time, or if you are not sure how your hair will respond. It adds a little time up front and prevents big surprises. Our article on why we do a test strand goes further.

Can I Get Fashion Color and Punk Hair Color in Antioch?

Bold color is something we love to talk about. Vivid and unexpected shades often start with lightening, which means they take planning, patience and a realistic conversation about how many visits it will take. We will walk you through what is possible, how to prepare your hair beforehand and how to care for it afterward so the color lasts. Big changes, such as brunette to blonde, blonde to brunette or a fashion color application, are booked as a Transformation (see color correction), which starts with an in-salon consultation. Come in with your inspiration photos and we will map it out together. Our article on what fashion color and punk hair take explains the prep.

How Do You Keep Color Looking Fresh Between Visits?

  • Use a sulfate free shampoo and a conditioner made for color treated hair. Ask us which Davines or Eleven Australia products fit your hair.
  • Wash less often when you can, and rinse with lukewarm water.
  • Protect your hair from heat with a heat protectant.
  • Book a gloss every so often to refresh tone and shine.

Our team keeps learning through advanced education with Davines, Eleven Australia and Sunlights, so the recommendations you get come from stylists trained on these lines.

Should You Choose All Over Color, a Gloss or Balayage?

Choose all over color when you want gray covered or one even shade from roots to ends. Choose a gloss when your color is in good shape and only the tone or shine has faded. Choose balayage when you want brightness and dimension rather than coverage. Color + Highlights sits in between: color with mini foils or express balayage around the face and crown. If you are unsure, tell us what you want to change and we will point you to the right service. Our guide to demi permanent color explains how shorter-lasting color works in general.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Often Should I Get My Roots Done?

It depends on how fast your hair grows and how much gray you are covering. We will give you a schedule that fits your hair and your calendar at your visit.

What Is the Difference Between Permanent Color and a Gloss?

Permanent color changes your hair color and covers gray. A gloss is semi permanent, so it adds shine and revives, refreshes or re-tones your color between visits rather than changing it completely.

Do You Offer Color for Men?

Yes. Ask about men’s color blending, a subtle way to soften gray, when you book a men’s haircut.

Can I Book Color and a Haircut Together?

Yes. Book a color service and a cut one after the other, and note it when you book so we give you enough time.

How Long Does a Color Service Take?

A root retouch takes up to about an hour and a half, color with highlights and a full head color take about two to two and a half hours, and a gloss takes around an hour. See the Service Menu for current times.
